You risk running into that situation if you use a sample covering letter that is not your own. The key point in writing a good covering letter is to stay focused on the end result of getting an interview. You should not be afraid of asking for that interview. Do not do what a majority of job hunters today do and that is hope and wait you get a call after your resume is read. You will probably be waiting a long time. You want to make sure there is no doubt that you will get called for an interview. Start off by addressing your letter to a specific person.
Make a good first impression and leave no minor details hanging or erroneous. The content of your covering letter must be meaty and at the same time concise. The covering letter sample must not be overflowing with details. But you must provide enough that the person reading it will want to know you more with it. Selectively pick the details in your resume that you consider to be worth highlighting and put them in your covering letter as a way of introducing yourself. Limit yourself to a single page and do not go beyond that. Few people would really take the time to reach page two.
One thing you should know is that writing an effective cover letter from concept to completion is a very difficult task to some people. They can seek help either in writing the cover letter or they may have to look at one or two cover letter samples to draw inspiration from. There is nothing wrong with this because research and writing either the cover letter or any type of academic piece is not a solitary process. You can borrow ideas from any source. But when this is done make sure that you report the source. This will be applicable when writing for academic purposes.
