Ultimately there comes a time when writing character reference letters where you have to seek any help you can get. If at all possible you must try your best not to rely on resume and cover letter samples no matter how good they are. You will have to express yourself individually when it comes to these things. Even if a cover letter and resume sample claims to be competent enough in itself a little bit of brain work to make sure you maximize the opportunity to express and introduce yourself in the most creative ways is also something that can spell the difference between getting a job and not getting past the screening processes.
